Oh I don't think the tongue is meant to be cut off, its just a piece of skin under the tongue that they clip. But it might be another type of bird you do that too, and the person who told me might have assumed its what you do to all talking birds.

No!
Absolutely not.
This myth is as old as the hills and it surprises me when it still comes up!
Birds don't use their tongues at all when they "talk", they use a part of their throat called a "Syrinx".
They make sounds kind of like you would if you were to blow over the top of a bottle. It's just that they get REALLY good at it.

The best way to encourage your little guy to talk is to spend time with him and love him for who he is. Some parrots simply don't talk. But that doesn't make him any less of a little "heart breaker".
Look after him, feed him well with lots of vegetables, and make sure he has fresh clean water every day. The better you take care of him, the better he will feel and the more he will be willing to learn from you.
Good Luck!

oh gawd no! don't you dare clip anything on a bird besdies wings or nails. males cockatiels are more likely to mimic speech than females. females will whistle and chirp, but only males can mimic speech. my cockatiel can say a few things, but usually, when he picks up a new phrase, he drops another.

Cockatiels are very smart and they don't need to get their tongues clipped. Once they start talking they won't quit! I used to have one a few years ago.

I got my cockatiel at 4 weeks and he's now ten years old. All the whistling and talking he learned was in the first year. Some get it ...Some don't

If you clip its tongue, you will stuff its ability to eat.
Why would you even think of doing that?

Not all birds copy speech.
Maybe this one is only interested in copying your whistles.

Some speak, some don't. It's up to the bird whether he/she will say anything. Keep speaking to it and it will probably figure out what you want sooner or later. Unless it knows you want it to speak and is outsmarting you by pretending it can't.

no. Cockateils will talk without having anything cut. What you need to do is stop whistleing and start talking. Your bird will only whistle if that is what you teach it. Use simple phrases. But please don't cut anything.

no this has nothing to do with ability to speak. it is based on talent, how young they were started, and the birds interest in learning to mimic.
