My husband has two dogs from before we met. He has trained them that it's okay to jump up and lick food off the kitchen counter, jump up on people, and jump up on the furniture. The dogs are both nine years old (sister and brother, border collies). He wants to get a new puppy sometime soon to "carry on the pack", since one of these two will peg out in a few years. How do I train the new puppy properly, and NOT to follow in the disgusting habits of these two dogs?? My husband will continue to do as he sees fit ,when I'm not here.

I would suggest taking your husband and his dogs to obedience training before you get a puppy. The puppy will learn from the other dogs, and then you'll have three ill behaved dogs at home. At obedience training your husband will learn the bad habits he has allowed with the other dogs is detrimental to the new puppy. I would say that if he is unwilling to do this then you should be unwilling to bring another dog into the home. Sometimes husbands need to be shown the error of their ways by someone other than us loving wives because they get so used to us nagging about one thing or the other.

You don't have a dog behavior problem, you have a relationship expectation problem and one of its SYMPTOMS is the dogs' behavior.
Go to a marriage counselor.
DO NOT try to train your husband. You will find yourself suddenly alone in the house.
Then read a book from the library about dog training.

Sounds like your real problem is getting your husband trained properly, not the dogs!

Good luck!! You are married to this man and live in the same house. You two need to get this thing straight between you, or otherwise you could have one confused dog.

either train the husband or the puppy will be the same way...it will follow what the older dogs do...all 3 of them...lol
