I don't think the intention is to drastically change the ph of the surrounding atmosphere quite the opposite is desired. We should hope that some govmnt' agency would measure these things and define what is acceptable but really industry is left to police itself and when economic forces drive the standards of what is acceptable then look around . its not just the car you drive.

If you have a major airport in your area there will be a lot of toxins in the air. Reason being, if an aircraft has a problem and must return to the airport, they are required to dump their fuel. Guess where? Maybe over your house or water if close by.
