Serving on a jury at a trial.

When there is a court hearing there is often a jury, which is made up of twelve people from the community. These people sit and listen to what everyone has to say (the defense and the prosecution in a criminal trial, or the defense and the plaintiff in a civil trial). When both sides of a case have been presented the jury then goes into a room to deliberate about whether someone is guilty or whatever it is they've been charged with.

In order to get people to serve the jury commissioner's office sends out notices the citizens of the state, and then the person who got a notice to serve on jury duty has to fill out the forms and wait to see if they really want him to be there the day of court.

If he has to go the day of court there is then a screening process done at the court in order for lawyers to figure out which of the group of people who have been called will actually serve on the jury.

You will get called in for jury selection. This is when they determine if you're eligible to serve and then if they want you to serve on a jury. If you get chosen you have to sit in the jury box with 11 other people and listen to evidence and then make a decision based on the facts of the case. Sometimes it's civil suits, which is when someone is suing someone else. Sometimes it's a criminal trial. I've been on two civil juries. We had to decide for or against the person doing the suing. In one case we decided against and in the other we decided for. In the one where we decided for the person bringing the suit we also had to decide on the amount of money they were awarded.
