When you clean wild game one can not always get all of the shot out and I know that it would be very easy for one to digest some of if without knowing. Do you belive that the body would be able to get rid of it or would it build up? And if so would there be any reprecusions from it?

Bound's hubby here:

I have to differ with the people above. For about the first fifteen years of my life, my family was living heavily off of upland game taken by shotguns. This would include rabbit, pheasant, quail, duck, and the occasional deer. All shot with lead and none of it shot with steel or the modern blends.

It's hard to believe a person could eat game and not notice shot in their mouth while they were chewing the meat. You just spit it out. While preparing the game, you would see the entry points and most of the shot would pass through.

The concern about lead contamination is generally associated with lead dust. None of us suffered from lead poisoning. We never had to toss meat because of lead contamination. Lead shot is so small, in most instances, it should pass through your body. I doubt you have to worry about a pile of lead accumulating in your tummy.

Game shot with lead shot is safe. The reason waterfowlers have to use "non-toxic" steel shot or bismuth is because of ingestion by bottom feeders which is more an anti-gun campaign than a health issue.

Before I worried about ingesting game shot by lead, I would be more concerned about all the food at the grocery stores that was steroid enhanced! There is a greater risk of complications from second hand steroid ingestion than game killed by lead shot.

If you are using lead shot, yes there is a risk. You must avoid eating the areas where the shot was, as it will be contaminated. The health effects can be cumulative and are serious... read the links below.

yeah, there is a risk if its lead shot, but honestly, one would have to eat ALOT of wild game shot with lead shot for this to be a serious risk. but, of course, its always better to be safe than sorry.

What they said. Most you can spit out, or it will pass through, but it's worth avoiding.

I use steel and bisthmuth shot, they both seem to work OK.

no. there is no way to have a build up. and plus. do you know how much lead you would have to have absorbed to hurt you. and most time you would be able to feel a lead pellet in your teeth.
