yes you can. Just add enough water to make a sauce consistency. Probably 2 oz. of water would be a good start plus the 16 oz. water the recipe calls for. I hope you have an 6 oz. tomato paste!

I would add about a cup of water to the paste. Know that the paste has a much stronger taste than the sauce - sauce is sweeter so you might notice a difference. I'm not sure what you are making but in some cases it doesn't matter and some it does.

P.S. What I use when making chili is an 8 oz can of tomato soup and everyone loves my chili!

tomato paste is concentrated and not as sweet as tomato sauce but that shouldn't be your problem. If the recipe calls for 8 oz of tomato sauce and you have a 8 oz can of tomato paste you should only use half the paste and add as much water to make it 8 oz. That's what I would do anyway. I see no reason for you to have to go to the store just to get the sauce when you have the paste right there waiting to be used.

Some say that Tomato Sauce & Tomato Paste is 2 different things! So ? if they are! U can convert tomato paste in to tomato sauce. Take the tomato paste 8 oz can & add 2-3 oz Vinegar.. then water 2-3 oz ( tomato juice is better to add if you have that mix then add whatever amount of it you need to add to your recipe! Many cheap Tomato Sauces you buy in Stores are made from Tomato Paste.. example President's Choice Tomato Sauce is one! I make tomato sauce alot from Tomato Paste and no one can tell that that was done!
Note if your tomato paste was a pale colour add
a wee bit of red food dye! Also if it's too runny
add a wee bit of cornstarch dissolved in a wee bit of warm water to thick it a bit!

you could just add extra water to make up the difference, if you have a 3 oz can of tomato paste, add one canful of water that will thin it out. then add the 16 oz of water in the recipe It won't be the same but you could maybe add some broth or tomato juice or v8 or something if you have anything like that. I think tomato soup might work too!

I make my own version of chili mac. Here's the recipe. Brown 1 lb. ground beef with a chopped onion and 1 diced green pepper. Drain. Add water to cover and a cup of macaroni. Simmer until pasta is cooked. Stir in ketchup and chili powder (1-2 tsp). Add a can of drained corn or a cup of frozen corn. Salt to taste. I find tomato paste a little too strong but ketchup is just right.
