Well regardless of what people say on here.I had advantage on my little Yorkie a month or so ago,and had let it out to potty, when I went to bring it back in ,the little guy was paralized and acted like he was going into a seizure.Grab him up and thought about checking to see if he had gotten injured, but found a tick on him.Within 30 minutes after getting the tick off he was back to normal.I called the vet and he said most dogs had a resistance to ticks, but some don't ,and if I hadn't removed the tick it would have eventually shut down his resportory system.Ticks have a poisen toxin that somedogs can't overcome and maybe this was your pet's problem.

Having that many ticks could make a dog very sick and even kill them. Imagine if YOU had all those blood sucking parasites on YOU. There are products now that can be applied monthly to prevent dogs and cats from getting fleas and ticks. You were negligent to let the dog live with you and then notice just before it dies that it is covered in ticks! Same with the doberman. Please don't get any more animals without going through some serious training on responsible pet ownership. You should have taken him to a vet for a check up as soon as you got him. You sure should have kept him flea and tick free considering what is available now, and asking about greenish stuff around his eyes, what is wrong with YOU? Why didn't you take him to a vet before he got that sick? YOu post makes me really sad.

I am saddened by this story, as a veterinary nurse you see soooo many people come in with sick animals and when asked how long they have been sick they say "oh 'bout a week" then the animal dies and we're the the bad guys for not saving it!! The simple solution to this is to take your pet to the vet if it looks sick or is not it's self, yes this can be costly but IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO TAKE YOUR PET TO THE VET THEN YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!
By the sounds of things your problem was probably the ticks. Not sure if you have paralysis ticks where you are but in OZ we have the bush tick (brown in colour) and paralysis ticks (a steel blue colour). The later cause paralysis, starting with wobbly hind legs, vomiting, wheezing and then collapse the body is then paralysed with no medical intervention the animal usually dies. There are topical medications to help prevent these but you still need to check them over daily.

I suggest you don't get another pet until you have all the information needed to care for the animal. SEE YOUR VET THEY ARE THERE FOR A REASON!!

p.s congratulations on having a Doberman for 13 years one of the oldest Dobies I have heard of.

ticks are very sneaky in the fur. Its the best to have the vet to check for ticks once a month and give the tick shot thing to keep ticks from bitting the dogs. THere are many types of ticks. Some ticks have bites which is very dangerous for the animals. They can put bad bacterias dog's blood.
But anyway. talk to your vet before getting another pet.

You keep screaming like that and you`ll never get an answer. No one can answer it except a vet and even then, the dog would have to be examined. Too late now, speculative answers are all you can and will get. The dog suffered a few days before he died? Covered with ticks? Doberman with ticks all over his face? Probably ignorance on the owner`s part.

Well,it could have been distemper that caused the eye discharge, preventable by a yearly vaccination.Ticks-preventable by applying a topical such as Frontline. You could have prevented his suffering and subsequent death just by TAKING HIM TO A VET!!!And your Doberman, covered in ticks-didn't you think to pick them off or apply a tick killer?OR WHAT ABOUT A VET? I don't know why you are on here crying to us,when it's your fault that they died.I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy for someone so negligent .I don't feel sorry for you,but I do feel very sorry for your poor dead dogs, and I hope you won't get any more animals, because you don't deserve them.Sheesh!

First of all I would like to say that I am sorry about the loss of the mastiff and dobie. Another thing that I would like to know is how old are you?? I mean really...anyone with any common sense would not let their poor animals suffer in such a horrible way!! When you take in an animal you are suppose to love and treat it with respect and dignity. Even in the Bible it says "Be kind to dumb animals". You should have had them on preventive care or at least took them to a vet when you saw something was going wrong and got them the help that they needed and deserved!! You could have even taken them to the local animal shelter and turned them over voluntary to get them the help that they needed. I won't pass judgement on you but all I have to say is...Lord have mercy on your soul!!

You're a nit-wit.

If your dogs were infested with ticks, WHY didn't you intervene? Rub 7-Dust into their coats once a week and you'll never have that problem again. Even better, don;t get any more dogs because you obviously have NO CLUE of how to take care of one. Dear GOD I hope you don't have kids. It's because of people like you that we have to have warning labels on the sides of buckets to tell parents that their toddlers can drown in water.

Please RUN, don't walk, to the doctor now and have yourself surgically sterilized. People with an IQ equivalent to that of a houseplant should not reproduce.

What's wrong with you? Your dogs had ticks all over them but you did NOTHING to remove them or treat them?! Your dogs died from anemia most likely. My dad had a big dog that got ticks so bad he had to have a transfusion. When you have ticks, TREAT YOUR YARD and your animals. Protect them. Better yet, here's an idea: don't get any more dogs. You obviously don't know how to take care of them.

Well, maybe had you been a RESPONSIBLE person and gotten the dog to a VET, you would know what happened! So nice to hear he was "suffering for a couple of days until he died".
What a loser. Don't get anymore pets.
