What a wonderful question! Make sure you hang pictures of all the family members in her room. Hang them so another patient won't wonder off with them. Almost everyone loves music and it's such a great mood up lifter. A radio preset to her favorite type of music is good. Make sure she has a personal comforter for her bed and not the generic nursing home bedspread, and a store bought comfy pillow and pillow case. Anything that can make her room look more like home will help with preventing depression that could possibly result. Especially if she has to remain in bed. If she has Alzheimer's, familiar items are essential. If she can move around and interact, simple games are a good way for her to socialize with other patients. Good luck to you. All the best to your Grandma! She's lucky to have someone who cares!

In a nursing home, they have various activities planned throughout the week to keep people busy. Taking part in the planned activities will make her one of the most popular ladies there! If you learn how to play card games, you could host a little event. (they can get real fiesty!)
I worked in a home for 5 years, and i've never seen a client as happy as when they get visitors. there are many people that get forgotten in these situations. Getting mail is another highlight, it seems little, but it means a lot. I hope this helps!

NOTHING is better than your presence every now and then. But, if you'd like, take magazines, sudoku puzzles, word search booklets, a Bible is the best book to read in nursing homes.

However, like I said before, your presence every now and then is the best gift for grandma. Nursing homes are very lonely places.

When I was in high school a friend of mine tried to have a group in which the students would visit nursing homes to entertain the residents. Some things that were suggested:

-if you play a portable instrument, that's always a big hit.
-Pictures of what you're doing or projects you're working on.
-Large print books or audio books

Does she like to read books? Do crossword puzzles? Make sure she has stationary, stamps & envelopes so she can write letters. If she is not able to read books the library usually offers books on tape that she could listen to. Another thing you could do is get together with family & friends to try to make sure she has at least one visitor a day. If 7 people would commit to visiting on a specific day each week she would have a visitor every day. Thanks for thinking of her! you're sweet!!!!

Well I strongly advise you to visit her often. If she can see well bring her books or movies. Keep her updated on the things going on in the world/media. Tell her you love her every time you go and see her. Bring your friends with you so she can feel important enough that you will bring someone you care about to meet her. Act interested in the things she's interested in.
