I haven't been able to find ANYTHING about plucking a chicken, a turkey, or any other bird, let alone a goose. What's the big secret? Does anyone know how or is it a lost art?

Since everyone seems to be curious, we have a hunter in the family. I would rather eat the bird than let it just go to waste. Oh, and I would appreciate it if vegetarians would stay out of this. Obviously it doesn't apply to you and all attempts to turn me from meat will be set aflame. Thank you! :)

Yes it's probably a lost art but here goes. Heat a kettle filled with water to boiling. Put the fowl in and pull it out and start plucking. Keep dunking until bird is clean. Make sure you have a kettle big enough to cover your fowl. Do this outside if possible. Messy, messy, messy. I have a question. Why do this when you can buy a goose and/ or duck in any grocery store

Heat up a bucket of water untill it is boiling then submerge the entire goose or turkey in the boiling water for a few seconds.
This loosens up the feathers and make them a lot easier to remove, if you try to pluck the goose without doing this, you will end up with very sore and blistered hands.

I live in SW Louisiana and hunting is prevelant. I know a lot of people take their game to the local butcher or specialty meat store and its gets cleaned and butchered. I'm sure there is a fee. My dad use to clean his own ducks but I must have been about 6 the last time he did that at the house (i think mom had a cow when she came home and found us playing with the beeks and feet---that was over 20 yrs ago)
just had a thought maybe you can look in hunting magazines and find something----

mellogirl89 - she doesnt mean pluck it while it's ALIVE for chrissakes, you freakin idiot.
it many places, it is either cheaper or easier to get a goose which is unplucked. she may even be going to a farm to buy organically raised geese.
hopefully, this will help you:

oh, and i know it's easier if the bird is not cold. being cold makes the fat firm up, and makes the feathers harder to pluck.
good luck!

I think you dip it in boiling water and then pluck away. I have never done this but have seen hunters do it to ducks when I was a child.

I hope that it is dead first, but you just start pulling on the feathers. The best way to do it is put the bird on the ground, step on both legs and grab the feathers and just pull! Have fun!
