There is no question of beleiving or not--Karma alone is the essence of Religion--If a religion does not talk about Karma it is not at all a Religion-"Karmanyevaa Adhikaarasthe maa Phaleshu Kathha chana".Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita clearly explains even prayers to God can miticate a person from Sin but can not absolve him/her completely(like in modern Jurisprudence an approver gets a les punishment but not completely absolved-One can not adopt "double standards" one in Social life and another in Religious Life.Everybody has to receive a reward for benevolent action(Karma) and undergo the punishment for a sin.Lord Krishna clearly says-one can not commit a sin and come to Me and say O! Lord!! pardon me for the Sin and go and commit another sin.

I believe that you will reap what you sow. If you sow bad seeds, you reap bad crops, and vice versa.
