usually, the ***** stops eating within 24-48 hours before the birth of the first puppy. It is normal. Sometimes, they stop drinking water as well. This helps them pass the pups through the birth canal easier as well as makes things a little cleaner for the pups. Just like human women, sometimes, when food has been ingested just before going into labor, "accidents" can occur.

yes usually dogs stop eating before their whelping (birth). I have a dog who is pregant too, and is about to have hers any day now. I've asked this question to and the websites that I have looked @ said that they usually lose their appetite around 6 hours before the whelping.

Hope this helps,
KS

Using eating habits as an indicator of when a dog is going to whelp is way to unreliable.
What you want to do starting on about the 58-59th day is start monitoring their rectal temperature, and when their temperature drops below 100 F they should whelp within 24 hours.
