A year but I'm also planning on going to go to an out of state in Massachusetts school. It sure is hard finding money to go. But sometimes some states require that you show proof that after you graduate that you plan to still reside in that state. Also some states require that you show that you are financially independent from your parents. Schools have wised up and have made it harder for students to get residency status just so they can reduce the cost of their education. It really sucks. Also if the school you are going to is in a neighboring state then the school might let you pay in state tuition you have to ask though!

Depends on the state but most of the time, it's 6 mos. to a year.

Eric,you didn't mention your state.However it is 6months-1yr.after you have filed your tax.
