The person claims that all science is based on the big bang, and that that's crap. That it doesn't help you live your life to know the mating properties of sperm whales. This is the person's argument. ????

I hate to quote an old joke here, but you're trying to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

The sad fact is, if a person has faith in their bible, no amount of proof and evidence to the contrary is going to dissuade, enlighten, or change their minds. At best its a draw.

There is such a thing as true science and here are its principle correct methods

Understanding science is essential in order to refute the dogmatic mind. In science there are no absolute truths, no sacred cows, and no great secret to be discovered that will allow all scientists in a field to retire and go home. Instead, all hypotheses and theories are subject to modification and even replacement as new research and discoveries become available. Science is not dogmatic, and those who try to present it dogmatically are doing it a disservice. It is important to understand the basics of several scientific concepts in order to understand the nature of science and the method central to it.

A summarized format for the Scientific Method is as follows¹:

1) Ask a question concerning observations which have been made.

2) Propose a hypothesis which could explain the reason(s) for the observations.

3) Make a prediction (which would hold true if the hypothesis were correct).

4) Test the prediction.

5) Draw a conclusion based on the outcome of the test.

Note: Use of controls, replication of experiment(s) and publication of results are also employed when using the scientific method.

The moment the first human being decided to reason out a problem, as opposed to acting on instinct, they began to act scientifically. Studying your environment, and making decisions based on the data you acquire, is SCIENCE.

Whether its knowing which wood keeps a fire burning longer, or which chemcals produce the most thrust in a rocket engine, all human knowledge that contributes to modern civilization is based on science, and exploring our planet and universe via the scientific method is how we acquire this knowledge. Certainly there are avenues of science that have little practical application in the average persons everyday life, but that doesn't take away from everything else that average people DO gain from science.

If your friend doesn't think science makes meaningful contributions to his/her life, tell him/her to try to live for one day without science, starting with not using the water that is pumped into their house by electric pumps. No soap, no toothpaste, no shampoo, no clothes, no lights, no car, no heat, no prepared food, no furniture, no buildings, no streets, no television, radio, newspapers, books, computers, cell phones, no NOTHING.

To not be a hippocrite, this person would have to strip naked and go live in the wilderness, and figure out how to live with only the things they could find. Essentially, they'd be dead in a few days without science.

Or, you could simply respond with the statement, "ignorance is bliss", as you are obviously dealing with a blissfully ignorant idiot.

If he thought about the mind-boggling amount of knowledge our species had to accumulate in order to build the computer he used to spout his inane ramblings, he might think twice about it helping him live his life. But alas, I'm sure he'd rather be living in a cave hunting antelope with a pointed stick.

Certainly there are *some* things science has discovered which will never have an effect on my life, or yours, or theirs, but I don't believe their thinking clearly if they think the could turn on a light, or take a bath, or use their microwave, or watch TV, or show off their ignorance on the internet, without science having been there to discover how it could be done.

Once they have reached that level of willful ignorance, there's nothing you CAN say. Their minds are closed and their ears aren't listening to anything you say. Suggest to them that they would do much more to fulfill God's will if they became a hermit in the wilderness as an example to their fellow Christians.

Tell them if they are so against science to live without the things science has made possible, like electricity, cars, mobile phones, computers, etc.
They can try to live like the people in the Bible, but would they like it?

I suggest that you don't respond. If you try to use logic to refute their insane claim, then you will fail. Their mind is likely incompatible with logic.
