Probably both: you can resist more and you might be using milder onions now. Do you keep onions in the fridge? The cold makes the offending compounds less volatile and it could be other reason why you don't tear so much now.
But I can assure you that there are some pretty strong onions still lurking out there. I still get bad onion days now and then.

There are many more varieties of onions now than way back when because I remember they were all tear jerkers too. Now you have a wide selection of onions from strong to mild and they don't nearly make you tear as much. For those that do, just peel them under cold running water and cut them up under water in a large bowl.

Maybe you are not cutting the same type of onion. Some are stronger than others. Sweet onions, like a Vidalia or Texas Sweet do not make me tear up. But there are others that I have tears running down my face.

The onions have definitely changed. And besides causing fewer tears, they have less flavor. I find that red onions are often more tear-inducting and oniony then white or yellow.

Okay, so they are putting chemical acids in onions so they don't make you tear?
That will be the next thing to kill us - ALL THE **** THEY ADD TO FOOD HERE IN AMERICA SO IT IS JUST PERFECT FOR US.
Other countries do not have all the additives we do in their food.

They are growing onions to be sweeter. This time of year the Vidalias and 1015's are out, too. Enjoy!

No, it's definitely the Onion. He has mourned the loss of his wife “Garlic”, his son “Green Onion”, and his daughter “Shallots” to the greedy chefs of the world so much that he has lost all his ZEST for life. :-)
