No, techically, it deprives you of an efficient immune system, which leaves you defenseless against many other diseases and infections.

HIV is the bug. It destroys your immune system. When your immune system gets so weakened, some other bug moves in and takes full advantage of the unprotected person. Then HIV is called AIDS. It's a hard downhill struggle for the person then with one new infection after another. There is a cocktail today that can keep some people with HIV alive indefinately. The drugs in the cocktail act like this: Imagine your house after a party and there's confetti all over the place. Everywhere. You get your vacuum cleaner out and set it to blow instead of suck, like a weed blower. You clean all the confetti out of your house by blowing it out. But, always, there's some confetti stuck here and there in hidden crooks and crannies throughout the house. HIV is like the confetti. The cocktail "blows" out most of it, but there's still no "cure" because you can't get all the confetti, or, all the virus. But, there's truly a good life for people on the cocktail. And, there's truly hope for a cure. I suspect the cure will have to be a genetic alteration, though, to create a better immune system. People who are not taking the cocktail of medications die for sure. I do not believe in hate, as my Yahoo answers would tell you. But, God help me, I hate that bastardly virus with every cell of my body. And, if there's an afterlife, I'm going after it and kick stomp it for a few billion years. I was a hospice nurse in the pre-cocktail AIDS crisis. The day that cocktail became available was the most important day in the history of this planet.
