OK....I grew up in the boondocks...so I've known how to swim as long as I can remember.

My parents sent me to swimming lessons as early as age 6 that I can remember. I always failed because I never could swim in a straight line for the instructors. When you learn to swim in the river, you always swim across with the current (which is never a straight line, it's always downriver and slightly toward the shore[swimming this way wears you out less and increases your level of survival]).
I have to say that my parents taught me to swim, and then I was sent to the YMCA to get me out of their hair.

Well, mostly I taught myself with the help of my older siblings but I started teaching my nephew and bascially all I do is put him in the baby pool at the gym and let him play in the 1 ft. water and he slowly starts to wander to the 3ft deep end. Then I'll hold his hands or stomach and show him how to kick and paddle. And he's pretty good at coming up if he goes under by himself.

My dad taught me. He took me out in waist deep water and supported my stomach with his hand and taught me the strokes. He was eventually able to take his hand away without causing me to sink. Since the water was only waist deep, I was not as afraid because I knew I could stand up if I wanted to. I learned in three lessons. He taught my uncle in only two lessons.

They didn't. I'm 26 and just started trying to swim this past summer.

My step-dad threw me off an 20 ft. cliff and told me to swim or die. So, I learn how to doggy peddle really quickly. I was about 6.
