I already have a wolfhound and use a tool to strip the hair, but i am rehoming a st bernard and would be greatful of any advise u can give me to care for him that u think relavant to that breed as well as the grooming as i believe they can shed alot..

I assume you are talking about a rough coat. The smooth coat requires just some brushing and of course nails and ears tended weekly.
Rough coats need a little extra brushing. A slicker brush works very well for regular brushing. A mat rake can be necessary if there is a mat that needs attention. Sometimes trimming around the feet and ears is necessary. If you live in cold areas that will have snow, keep the bottom of the feet trimmed even with the pads. It will help prevent snow balls from forming.....although they still will!!!!!!! A little Bag Balm applied will help in those conditions!!!! They crossed the smooth coated Saints with Newfies to improve the temperment and to give the longer coat that was hoped to offer better snow protection. Didn't quite work out that way!! The rough coat suffers snow balls in the feet and sometimes on other parts of the coat like Newfies.
The key is a quick daily or every other day slicker to maintain the coat. If you let it get out of control...it is a problem!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont call him "CUJO".
Speak to a vet they will advise you on the best treatment for St Bernards. See if you can buy a book about the breed this should help you in the up bringing of him. Good Luck

I'd just like to add that with these breeds that have hairy feet pay special attention to any mats that start to form between the toes; they can end up causing an abcess. And they pick up stuff like grass seeds. I'd agree that its probably best to trim it.

A pin brush will artwork yet do not waste your funds getting one which also has bristles because they received't even commence to flow by a saint's coat. to boot a very good high quality pin brush, after I had my newfie, I extensively utilized a rake - you'll locate you want one to get by all that undercoat.

They need lots of brushing everyday. Keep an eye on the ears. They are prone to ear infections. I used to trim the hair between the pads on the feet. It helps them with traction on tile floors.
