Red, Yellow and Blue are the "primary colors."

Red+Yellow = Orange
Red+Blue = Purple
Blue+Yellow = Green

Mixing all three primary colors in different amounts will make different shades of brown, or possibly black.

Orange, Purple and Green are "secondary colors."

"Tertiary colors" are formed by mixing a primary color with a secondary color. For example: red-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, etc.

Mixing two colors that are opposite on the Color Wheel will create a shade of grey or "muddy" color.
Opposite colors: Red+Green, Blue+Orange, Purple+Yellow.

Set aside the three primary colors blue , red and yellow. Mix some of the red and yellow together and have orange. Mix blue and yellow together and get green . Mix Blue and red make purple. Of these three colors are now six colors . These new colors are the secondary colors . Although you can buy the default colors , you should know how to create your own colors. This allows you to set the color of your paint to meet fully the color you want.

When you buy a new set for color rather comes with a tube of black ink or slate. If you are looking for realistic painting techniques do not use black at all. This is because the black color is rare in nature. Unless there is a black fabric re-creation , most of the objects, including shadows, not blacks . Look closely shadows in your room. What may seem black may actually be more of a dark purple, blue, brown or green. Using the deep purple and blue shades gives your painting an extra level of complexity , not to mention the shadow zone will not stick out like a sore thumb among the rest of the paint.
