I am starting a new job this week at a major department store. It is on a main avenue and there is no or very limited parking in the back, she said to park where customers park and there is a meter for 25 cents every 1/2 hour (maximum 2 hours). She mumbled something about once I get in the system maybe she can fix it but I am concerned.
1. Even if I keep running outside every 2 hours to fill up the machine with quarters, that means I have to go to the bank and get rolls of quarters and I work from 10 to 8pm so that's 10 hours or $5 a day in quarters. Do I have a right to be reimbursed for that? I am afraid to ask on my first day of work, or will she try to get away with making me pay if I don't bring it up?
2. I am afraid my car could be towed (it's an expensive car) because I am staying longer than the 2 hour max. and someone might complain that that red car has been parked there all day. Or if I get a ticket? There are a lot of cops and traffic guards around that street.

Also should I talk to one of the officers if I can and explain my situation or should I keep it on the down low?

what's a meter reading department? If there was a sticker I could get, wouldn't my boss have told me ?

Contact the meter reading department and ask if you could pay a set amount and get a sticker to put on your car so that you don't have to keep running out to put money in the meter.

You have to be firm with your boss. You SHOULD be a valued employee, brand new or not. She wouldn't have hired you if she didn't believe you were worth it. So act like it. Stand up for yourself. You cannot risk having your vehicle towed at expense to you, and secondly...is this job really worth it if every day of work you have to plan ahead to bring in rolls of quarters and spend that much money to simply park your car? If you choose to believe it is worth it to plan ahead, bring all those quarters, at your expense... then tell her, you will be going outside every 2 hours to update the toll. If she has a problem with that she can either give you a place to park or find someone else. You need to be firm, don't let her walk all over you because shes the boss of the store, you're the boss of you, and thats more important. Also you can't risk hoping to work it out with a cop if your car gets caught being parked there without the meter money. Cops don't care so don't hope for a nice one that will let you go because thats unlikely...also you can't be worrying about that every single day either. So be firm. Make a decision on whats most important to you. Don't ever let anyone walk all over you. You'll end up getting more respect in the end anyway...

If this is a major department store, what do other employees do? If possible, ask around with one of your fellow co-workers about the situation. I'd see if I could car-pool or catch a ride for the first few days until the situation is straightened out, because I'm certain your employer isn't going to look kindly on your having to run out every two hours to check the meter. And perhaps you could speak with the department in charge of checking the meters about the situation - they could advise you if there are any all-day paid parking lots nearby, I'm sure. It would be a much better situation than parking in these temporary, metered spots.

Considering this is a main avenue, there should be public transportation in the area. Save yourself the headache and the money and help protect the environment and use it.
If you can't get a parking space from them, this means your job isn't a very high end one, and a regular retail job is definitely not worth the expense and agravation you'd have to go through to get to it.

i would be up front and ask straight out, this job may not be worth it after a few tickets or its towed, there is nothing wrong with asking or see if within a few blocks there is residental parking or something where you can leave you car for longer periods of time

Can you car pool? Is there someone you can rely on to leave you at work and pick you up? Can you take a bus to work and arrange for someone to pick you up in the evening when work is over? Is the job worth it going through all the hassle?

If your boss doesn' care for something like this, maybe he shouldn't be your boss! Our employees deserve the best of our interest! Look for another job is possible! If he neglects you since your very first day, what do you expect from him int the future?

the sticker idea is a good idea... and if you pay for a monthly sticker get a recipt and save it so when tax time comes around you can write it off as a work expense, if your boss isnt reimbursing you for it.
