I love the CSI series. Now there's toys for youngsters to be a CSI officer. There's even a serial book series and a board/computer game too. Now high schools even offer foresnics classes, even colleges too. Do you have to be a cop for awhile before you go to the lab and then to the field? Curious to know.

First please remember there are very few of these job openings, most police departmetns do not have crime labs, they merely process evidence, pack it up and send it to the state crime lab.

But you go to college and major in one of the science feilds or have a major in foresnics from a few colleges that offer it.

Often while waiting for a better opening you may be a evidence tech, just collecting evidence.

Normally no, youare not a cop first, totally different field.

Also the crime techs don't go out into the field chasing the bad guys, they stay in thier labs doing reports

Ok, first understand that CSI is FICTION. Second, know that there are a lot of people trying to be CSI's right now. Most crime scene work is done in a lab, where you will be doing the same job over and over and over. You want an interesting job? Go be a pathologist, it takes 13 years of college, but it pays well, and you can always find a job. Other than that, get a chemistry, biology, or "forensics" degree, and best of luck to you.
