it all depends if you are a seasoned cyclist ? if you are not, i would recommend you to go to your LBS and get the bike guys over there to help you choose a bike within budget, you don't need to go high end as you are a beginner and you dont need those really high end frames as you would not be able to tell the difference.
if you are a seasoned cyclist, i believe you would have gone to Ebay and look for some really good used bikes, and your budget would have gone twice the amount. anyway LBS is the best bet as they are able to tell you when people around the area have group rides and you are able to join in. Kick back and Enjoy the new bike you purchased. Cheers

I think more important than brand (well, stick to known ones!) is the fit you'll get on particular bikes, which is very important when you're spending that much on a road bike. Most good local bike shops will do customized 'fittings' where they come up with the best sizes, angles, and tube lengths for your comfort and size. It does usually cost $50-70, but most places will apply that to the cost of the bike. And make sure you ride it first, and feel like it fits too! Carbon is neat, but is a little harder to care for, so I guess I like aluminum, Ti, or a blend with maybe some carbon.
Best of luck, that's a fun thing to do - and a great time of year to shop too, with bike shops going into winter!

Some of the Giant carbons run right about there as do some of the alloy TCRs too. Check the bike shops for close-outs on the 2006 models cause the '07s are coming in stock now and the shop might start marking them down. You could almost swing a Cervelo Soloist alloy for that (about $2200 I think). Cannondale isn't bad, but for the price you can get more bang for the buck with a different brand. You might look into Specialized but don't get me to lying about which model(s).

If I were looking to get a nice new road bike and I had a $2000 budget, I would start looking on some of the cycling forums and buy something used and really high end. You can come up with some unbelievable deals on some excellent bikes.

A carbon Trek, Giant or Kestrel. I have a 2005 Giant TCR-C2, love it. Got it on ebay for $1760 to my door brand new.. Has a very comfortable ride and 10 spd. I upgraded from a 1992 R900 Cannondale. The prices should be coming down on ebay now for the holidays. Good luck!

You can actually get a pretty nice custom built bike for about $2K. Bob Jackson Cycles of Leeds England will build a full custom bike- right down to the color- for that money.
Yes, they are in England, and yes, it takes about 8 weeks, but once you ride a bike built just for you, you'll never be happy with one off the shelf.
