She is a stray dog we have only been feeding her for a week and we know she is pregnant. Does anyone know of a web site or just general advice on what to do when her pups come. We wanted to take her to the humane society but they would kill her on the spot plus all of her pups and I just couldnt live w/ myself so I have just adopted her untill the pups are old enough.

I can not keep either the pups or mom. I live w/ my parents and my stepdad is already having a cow because I was crying when he said that we could not keep her and that he wanted to just drop her at the side of the road.
My mom and I have named mom "Betty" and although she has only been hanging around for a week we still have been attached to this very sweet dog.
eventually we are going to have to get rid of Betty and her pups but it is all we can do for now

dont think less of me if I had my way I would have an entire petting zoo at my house.

Please contact a beagle rescue group immediately. Go to google and type in your city and beagle rescue. This is a situation to be handled by experienced folks. You did a great thing by taking her in temporarily. She would be best off with a rescue group now. They are used to handling the situation and will have good luck placing the mom and puppies when the time comes.

There are things called no-kill shelters and breed rescue groups. Call them IMMEDIATELY. Petfinder will have lists of no-kill shelters and I'll link to the beagle rescue group for you. Start calling each and every day and e-mail them, too. Even if they can't take the dog right now, they can help walk you through the steps to help ensure a healthy delivery.

As far as the humane society is concerned, make sure you call them before jumping to the conclusion that they will kill her right away. If you already know this, then start thinking about other things you couldn't live with. What happens if she goes into distress during birth and suffers before she dies? What happens if her puppies systematically get eaten by opossums or racoons? What happens if she gets hit by a car and the puppies are left alone? Unfortunately there is never an easy answer in moments like this. I've been there and cried and cried over the decisions I've made. I honestly hope that everything works out ok and one of the rescue groups are able to take her. : )

well, the best advice you can get is from a vet because you need to know when the puppies will arrive, how many and how to take care of them...
however, you need to begin advertising that you have puppies so when they are old enough, they can get a good home (it shouldnt be too hard, beagles are popular dogs for all kinds of families) and find a home for the mom too,. She may not be as easy as the pups, but older couples like older dogs because puppies are too much of a hassle for them.
when the pups are scheduled to come, you need to find a clean room or area to keep the mom in. and you'll need lots and lots of towels...keep her in this space before the delivery so she's comfortable and won't be scared of a new area..(im sure giving birth is scary enough for her) also, close to the due date, make sure someone is with her at all times...
as for when the puppies come, all you need to do is give the mother space but help her remove the birth sacs and keep the newborns warm..after that, let her do what she needs to herself
good luck! hope i was helpful!:)

What you need to do for her is set up a whelping box with lots and lots of newspaper in it in a very quiet room. When she's close to whelping she will lose her appetite, become pretty restless and that's when she needs access to the box. She'll go in there and start nesting. You need to keep an eye on her to make sure she's not having any problems. She will have her puppies weaned at around 6 weeks and they can go to new homes around 8 weeks.

I don't know why you think the humane society would kill her, but you need to think about what will happen to her and her puppies if she has trouble whelping and needs a vet's care. Plus you will need to keep her and her puppies in a warm room until the puppies are old enough for homes. She might be better off at a shelter where she'll get the care she needs.

Your local veterinarian will have contact details for rescue organisations that may be able to help you rehome her or even help you out financially with some sort of foster care program where you are the carer until she has the pups and they are rehomed or until they find someone to take care of her.
Whether you decide to keep her until the pups are old enough to rehome or you are a temporary carer you should see your local vet for whelping information (e.g nutritional requirements for mums before and after birth, whelping problems that can occur and what to do, puppy raising info.....) and also to find out cost of emergency procedures in regards to whelping mums e.g ceasarians etc (a c-section at 2a.m can be quite costly). This is where a rescue organisation can come in handy as they may be able to help you with cost and rehoming.
Looking after a preganant mum isn't too hard but once the pups come along you may need some help so make sure you can get extra help and you have somewhere warm and safe for her to have and raise the puppies.
GOOD LUCK

First, don't despair. I have a feeling that you and your Mom may be able to overcome your Dad's aversion to the dog if she is as wonderful as you say. . .

Secondly, take her to a vet. He may be able to perform an abortion and spay her at the same time. If not, you will have to be prepared to take her pups to the Humane Society or advertise to give them away. You cannot keep them.

Third, it is possible if she looks pure bred (the vet can usually tell you) that she got into heat and escaped the fence of someone's back yard. Have you had her scanned for an ID implant? Someone may be frantically looking for this sweet dog.

When the pups come you should take them all (mom+pups) to the animal shelter so they can find a forever home someday. And i think its a great idea that you decided to keep her until the babies are born. And hey maybe your mom+stepdad will change their minds and let you keep all of them. Well Good Luck

Here is information on contacting beagle rescue organizations.

Better for her and the pups if you can get her into rescue asap, that way she will be cared for by experienced people who know how to whelp puppies. They will also have a good network for finding proper homes for her and her babies.

Do a search for beagle rescue... if she is purebred any beagle rescue group will take her in. If not look up general animal rescue or small breed rescue online and even in your yellow pages. Private rescues won't put her to sleep, they will get her proper vet care and find good homes for the pups.

The Humane Society doesn't euthanize healthy animals.
