Yes you can get away with the Windows XP Pro Upgrade....I know someone that did the same thing. They had a bootleg copy of XP Pro on their machine and started having problems and they bought XP Pro Upgrade and did a upgrade and his is legal and works great now..Just do a upgrade when asked not a new install( which you can do with the upgrade disk)..Windows Vista won't be out for another 6-8mnths and then it will be in the beta stage and will have bag bugs and need fixes for atleast 1yr after that. XP Professional is no obsolete yet it will be the main stay for atleast 2 more yrs. Then Windows Media and Vista will be the norm. What ever happened to Windows Longhorn......Thanks

I'd get the full install disk of XP Pro because it contains everything to keep your OS working properly. The upgrade disks seem to lack some esential data. Here's a site for relatively inexpensive full install disks:

When it's time to make your XP Pro genuine, just do a Repair Install. It overwrites the existing XP Pro and you won't lose any personal settings or programs. You will have to reinstall any Windows Updates that came out after the install disk was made.
This link gives instructions and screenshots of what you'll see:

EDIT: Yes, Windows Vista is supposed to be available in January 2007. But XP will live on for many more years (people are still using Windows 98.) Not only that, I predict Vista will have a lot of problems for the first several months, just like XP did and every OS before that. When XP came out, it only took about 6 months for Service Pack 1 to be released, and less than a year later SP2 came out (the largest service pack ever seen.) I think Vista will follow in that same tradition and it's SP1 will be even larger than SP2 was for XP (IMHO).

plrr

i'd say you have to buy the full version unless you have a windows 98 cd laying around somewhere. honestly, if i could, i'd try to get by with a free version of linux until next year, which isn't that far away, and buy windows vista if your computer is compatable. so sense blowing a pile of cash on XP when it will be obcelite in a few months.
