Depends, when you purchased the vehicle was there a warranty on the vehicle, or was the dealer up front with you and sold the car AS IS? If it was sold AS IS, it means exactly that, so you would have to make the appropriate repairs. If the car had a warranty, then the dealership will probably cover the majority of the cost. You may have a deductable.
Look at the contract you signed when you purchased the car. It would be the only way to know who is responsible.

Did you buy it as is? If so, it's on your. Did it have some warranty coverage? If yes, is the part that is broken covered by that warranty? If not, you pay. If it is, you still have have some liability coming. For example, if the transmission failed, and was covered, they would buy you a rebuilt transmission and put it in, but you would pay for the new filters and fluid, that type of thing.
Generally those parts subject to wear and replacement are not covered, that would be tires, lights, belts, brakes, windshield wipers, etc. Routine maintenance would not be covered. Oil changes, alignments...

You cannot purchase a car as is from a dealer (unless you pay cash). If you financed the car, you should have some type of warranty. If it's an 03, there should still be some manufacturer warranty on it, unless it's got a poop ton of miles on it (more than 60K)
Take it back to the dealer. If they refuse to fix it, talk to them about your state's lemon laws that prevent them from being able to sell you a car that they know is defective.
good luck!
