Why does everyone think that simple things are from the store only? Of course you can make pudding at home. Here is a basic vanilla recipe.

INGREDIENTS
2 cups milk
1/2 cup white sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon butter
DIRECTIONS
In medium saucepan over medium heat, heat milk until bubbles form at edges. In a bowl, combine sugar, cornstarch and salt. Pour into hot milk, a little at a time, stirring to dissolve. Continue to cook and stir until mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. Do not boil. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and butter. Pour into serving dishes. Chill before serving.

I like Alton Brown's recipe. It makes instant pudding just like the box stuff. First is how to prepare it once made, then is the homemade mix.

1 3/4 cups homemade Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix, recipe follows
2 cups milk
2 cups heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Place 1 3/4 cups of dry pudding mix into a medium saucepan. Add milk and heavy cream and whisk to combine. Over medium heat, bring mixture to a boil, continuously whisking gently. Reduce heat to low and cook for 4 minutes while continuing to whisk. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour the mixture through a sieve and into individual dishes or a 1 1/2-quart serving dish. Cover the surface of the pudding with plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator to chill completely before serving, approximately 4 hours.

Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix:
3 ounces Dutch-processed cocoa, approximately 1 cup
2 ounces cornstarch, approximately 1/2 cup
6 ounces confectioners' sugar, approximately 1 1/2 cups
1 1/2 ounces instant non-fat dry milk, approximately 1/2 cup
1 teaspoon salt

In a large bowl or plastic container with a lid, combine the cocoa, cornstarch, sugar, instant non-fat dry milk, and salt. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
Yield: 3 1/2 cups dry mix

Naturally you can make your own pudding! Only you will have to do a little bit of experimenting for the best result to your own taste!
As main ingredient you use corn starch! That is what hardens your pudding. The rest is only "to taste", as powder milk, eggs, chocolate, sugar, fruits, raisins or whatever you like!
Just try it out and you will like it! Already hundreds of years ago our ancestors made delicious pudding without help of a grocery!
I wish you good results!

There is no way to make pudding without gelatin and powdered milk unless you buy a mix.
