Anything that is contrary to the perfect will of YHWH according the Holy Scriptures found in the Tanak and the New Testament.

sin is anything that isn't of God, or anything that does not glorify Him. If by saving themselves from hell, you mean that they can go to heaven for being a "good person," then no. The only way we can save ourselves is to ask for forgiveness and confess that Jesus is our Lord and Savior.

Sin is purposely turning away from God through thought, word, or action. There are also sins of omission, failing to do good. We can save ourselves from hell by repenting of these sins, being truely sorry, and trying not to do them again.

sin is any action or inaction, word, or attitude that is contrary to Jesus' command to love God with all of your heart, mind, and strength and your neighbor as yourself.
A person cannot save themself from Hell separate from the grace given by God. On the other hand, God wishes for all persons to be saved from Hell and gives all people the necessary grace for this.

Sin is anything that separates you from God, other people or yourself. We are meant to be in communion with God and to live in peace with all of His creation.
In Christian thought you can not save yourself. Jesus came and did that for you. When you make the decision to follow Him and become baptized you are baptized into His death and into His Resurrection. This saves you.

Anything that takes us away from godly thoughts/behavior . . .anger, jealousy, etc. As for saving yourself from hell, well, we're already here.
