I am in school. I have to take timed writings. Some people told me to think one letter at a time, and some say just go one word at a time, while others say a sentence at a time.

I think practice is the key. You read and practice. It is like playing a musical instrument or martial arts work. Through practice you begin to act without thinking. You see something and act upon it immediately. If you take time to think it will be too late. I say practice and keep practicing. Once you are more accomplished, you can read ahead. That means that you remember what you read previously and type it as fast as you can. You will find yourself waiting for your hands to catch up unless you are really fast. Then you will not notice much time lag. The alternative is if you are a slow reader. Then you are limited by that speed. Then again, through practice you may find yourself typing without actually reading. Again, it all goes back to practice and more practice.
HINT: practice makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect. If you practice a mistake, then you will make a mistake.

The best method for me was to focus on the paper I was typing. As I was reading it, I was also typing it! =) Just make sure to know where each home letter is (asdf ;lkj) and practice! You'll do better =)

We do not think one letter at a time. Why would that advice be helpful, then?
