So sorry to hear of Nan's passing. I just lost my Ricky 2 days ago. he was only 1 years old. Depending on the mutation depends on the life span. Normal grays can live up to 20 years with great nutrional diet. Another words, not just seed. Other mutations like Lutinos and Pieds and Pearls may live 12 to 15 years. White faced, which was what my Ricky was, up until a few years ago lived to only about a year,( he died form internal hemmoraging due to a perferated proventiculus, and he went VERY fast,no warning before he got very ill again after treatment was done for Mega B fungal infection that he was born with. Get your new bird checked for this, we did not know that he had it until he was over a year and got very sick 1 day, we treated him, then he died 3 weeks later because of the damage that the infection caused.) but now most are living a bit longer since breeders are not in breeding as much.

Cockatiels are capable of living 25-30 years. The world record is 38 if I remember right. Most tiels live only to 10 due to illness, accidents and improper nutrition. Your fid has a greater chance of living a long life if you feed them a varied diet low on fats. Fruits, veggies, occasional pieces of turkey and tuna and some seeds should make up the bulk of their diet. Some people would include pellets in their diet. I feel birds need seeds to serve as mental stimulation. In the wild birds would be foraging and cracking open seeds for large portions of the day. Pellets don't serve this purpose though they DO have most of the nutrients birds need. That helps cut down on nutritional deficiencies such as those for Vitamin A.
