Does the world really need UK ambassadors or "High Commissioners"? In the age of internet?
Gazillions could be saved if all EU countries could merge all their embassies everywhere.
What do you people of the UK think?
Personally I would trust a French ambassador more than en English one. But that's personal

Saw some of the answers: absolutely hilarious. Especially that dumbass from the US who obviously can't read! Well he is in safe hands: more than 60% of all Americans will never in their lives have an international passport.
Lose your passport somewhere? So go to the EU embassy and have a new one issued. Whats the big deal?

Ambassadors are not there, to be trusted
A British Ambassador represents,the Queen
and any UK nationals
that visit or live / work in that country .
As Ambassador ,
he is there, to sort out problems with passports and visas,
from that land, to the UK ( if he is the British ambassador )
he is also there in a welfare capacity,
for British citizens ; who may find themselves in difficulties .
There is also business and social aspects to his job .
In a world where, travel is so easy and trade so wide spread ,
and crime and Terrorists so rife
I believe we need a representative , in every 'fly-blown' country ,
that we are likely to visit .!!!!
Money well spent !
Personally, i would not trust a French Ambassador,
further than i could throw him .

Yeah. Loose your passport in a foriegn country and see how you get on without the UK embassies.
BTW As a legal representative of her Majesty the Queen, the ambassador would be BRITISH not English!

The people in embassies and consulates act on behalf of their country in such things as trade agreements and on behalf of their nationals for the issue of passports, registration of births, deaths and marriages of their nationals. They also issue visas, work permits, resident permits etc. to people wanting to visit or live and work in the home country. When one of their nationals get into difficulties, such as losing a passport, being arrested etc. they do their best to help. So looking at the things embassies do, I do not think it would work by just having Internet contact. AND, I wouldn't trust a French Ambassador more than one from my country - England.

You will be PLEASED to know that when people like you get their way ( the minority that is ) and SELL this country & them selves out to the GREATER good of the political C # # K up of the EU (Brussels) our embassies will close.
And i do think that if you go to Israel you'll be able to go and see one, they are starting to biuld them around the world already, even though the EU is not a country & has NO constitution. But "HAY" whats democracy to TOSSERS like you.

until the european gets its act at the same time, a citizen residing out of the country has to pass to the Consulate of their homestead u . s . to get a passport. Even the British Consulates could be bloody complicated. whilst my husband grew to become into working quickly in France his passport grew to become into due for renewal. He went to the consular component to the British Embassy in Paris and grew to become into informed, that they won't renew it. He the two had to pass to England or pass to the British Consulate in Switzerland. (His u . s . of place of abode). So, regardless of the shown fact that under very lots of rigidity at paintings, he had to return to Switzerland to get a renewal. Having lived out of the country greater suitable than a million/2 my existence, I each and every so often think of that consulates (from all international places) are merely there to make existence as complicated as a danger.

So if you were arrested in africa, you would be happier with an email saying 'thinking of you' or would you rather meet with someone who represents you?
