I used to LOVE doing this! First off, make sure you get water-soluble paint ... tempra worked great for us. Then, plan this out ahead ... because what goes on first will be on the "front" of the window. For instance ... if you want Santa "inside" the sleigh, you'll have to paint the sleigh first.
Here's a good site with much more info:

I Would leave the painting of the window till spring time as you will have to have the window open to let the paint dry by the same token you do not want to be painting doors or skirting boards all should be left until spring or MY MISS IS will have me at it over the exmas time

If youre not that artistic there are window sprays are are designed to look like ice and snow, some of my friends and I used them to decorate the school once, and the snow spray is absolutly magnificent and the ice spray has to be used very carefully because if you overdoo it, it turns out looking bright blue!

i'd suggest that you paint onto a large piece of accetate using glass paints - then you can put the painting up again next year - easier to paint on a horizontal surface too xx

you will need to use an emulsion based paint so you can wash it off after Christmas.
