It depends on how much you can handle pain, what is being done, and the orthodontist.
I had minor work but my pain was at an 8 and would last for several days. I had a really bad orthodontist.
My brother, who had major work, his pain would only be 4 or 5 and would last for a day at most. He had a top 10 orthodontist.

Getting them put on wasn't the bad part. It was how sensitive my teeth were afterward. The first day was bad. Like an 8. The next day a 7. The next two days down to a 4 and then it was fine.
Every time I went in to have them tightened, they would hurt for the next couple of days. It is going to be a good idea to have food in the house that you don't really have to chew very much.

Getting them on is nothing. However your gums may hurt a bit from rubbing the braces. They will toughen up and that will stop. The only pain involved is when you have them tightened at each visit. It only hurts 1 or 2 days after but the pain isn't exactly painful. More like uncomfortable. In other words, don't plan on eating a steak the day after your visit.
