I have a 6 Year old who is reluctant to speak. Once we go around other children she can be very quiet for along time, but when she is willing to talk she can be quite mean and bossy. She is usually in a bad mood and never happy. My home is very normal, my husband and I don't argue in front of the kids, and tend to get them involved in lots of activities and things kids like. I have one other kid who is about one year younger who is always in a happy mood, even though my 5 year old lashes out at her for no reason. Is there something wrong with my child please help.

This may sound like a simplistic answer, but why not sit down with her and ask her? At five years old, she's plenty old enough to tell you how she's feeling and what's bothering her. Give her the benefit of the doubt. And treat her with as much respect as you would want to be treated (or as much as she can handle); don't talk down to her. It may be that she is involved in too MANY activities. Children need a balance. Maybe she feels as if she doesn't see you and her father enough. Maybe she doesn't want to be involved in lots of activities and things. When you have your children involved in everything under the sun, and you're running here, running there, and not having much time at home with each other, just to bond and BE...then it gets to where you don't know your kids as well. All I'm saying is, before you start taking her to psychologists and school counselors, just consider that all she might need is her mom (and dad). Sit down and talk with her, and take time to spend with her and her sister...and maybe consider reducing the amount of activities they are involved in, and replace some of them with more family time. Hope this helps. :)

My parents where great with me. They never fought in front of me, or serious behind me. Like you said a normal home life. About the not talking, my personal experience, I mean when I was a kid I was the same way. I never talked to people because I was shy. I opened up a little when I got older, but even to this day I don't speak much, lol man of few, but important, words. I also had a mean streak sometimes. My parents just kept discipling me when I was bad or mean and that corrected in time too. Now I get many compliments on how respectful and nice I am. My parents get compliments for me too. I can honestly say the compliments are true, not just a front.

Hope this helps.

Have your ever looked at your family history and found out if anybody had the same problems. Try to find that out first and once you do start asking questions on what approach was taken to handle the situation you make get some answers from their your family members. You are mom and have a maternal instinct. this will give you some clues on how to approach your daughters behavior.
If you decided to got to a doctor. Most likely they are going to want to put her on medication.

My sister did not start talking until she was 6 and was very shy and sad all the time until high school. She is not even a fraction of the person she was when she was younger.

Good luck with your daughter.

This is what worked for me concerning my kid when he got that way around cousins and other kids ( I have just the one and he is 16 now) I would take him out for a walk , just the two of us. He always seemed to open up and start telling me what was bugging him that way. You may want to get him started by asking a few key questions such as how was your day? Or what bugs you the most? Make sure you do not start asking though until you have been walking a while and had a fun talk first. Good luck!

Maybe your unhappy child never got enough attention from you guys since she could speak. If the second child is one year younger, that is when she started speak. Maybe you guys were too busy and she didn't get much encouragement (just my guess. Sorry if this isn't the case). If this is the case, try to separate the two kids as much as possible and find something she would like to do. I heard horse back riding helps some kids with emotional problem.

its seems to me tat ur child is extra sensitive.as she iz reluctant to speak this shows tat she is not v.confident about herself.u should spend more time wid her.talk 2 her more frequently.try 2 dig out wt is disturbing her n aboveall make her feel tat she is really important 4 u people.first share ur problems wid her so tat she feels important then gradually she,ll start sharing her problemz wid u.best of luck.

Have her evaluated by the school speech therapist and your family doctor.
