Is it normal for dogs to eat their dung? I've been puppy sitting lately and the dog has been really attracted to its poo and started licking it!! Does any one know why they do this??

Lots of healthy dogs do this no problems atall. :) if you think it is gross then get some Bitter Apple and spray the poo, or just pick it up :| :) :D

Well Ive actually never seen a dog "attracted" to its stool, but my dog ate his sometimes. I think they do that because it might still have a little scent of whatever it ate such as food or something that really smelt good so that probably whats causing the addiction. I wouldnt recommend putting your dog on medication or putting anything on its stool to make the dog not want to go near it...i would rather recommend you just pick up the stool and throw it away before the dog even gets to it. also try and keep the dog from even going close to it and pretty soon the addiction problem will most likely be broken. If not just try and keep the dog away from it as much as possible. Also if this continues then I would take the stool to the vet and get it checked to see what could be causing the dog to like it. There can also be an opportunity that the dog could get sick if it just digested something that could of killed it and then if it ate it all over again then the dog would have it in his stomach again. Good Luck!

Honestly the ONLY remedy for this is to remove it, as soon as it happens. There are any number of reasons put forward for why a dog will do this, one of which is their food isn't being properly digested, so it comes out only partly digested, and is attractive to them. And there are many so-called remedies (and I'd suggest your puppy is too young to be given any of them), none of which has ever worked, with my lot, other than picking it up. I really wish you'd not taken this puppy from this BYB at such a young age. She 'bribed' you into taking him when in fact she should have kept him for AT LEAST another 3 weeks. Had you walked away, she'd have perhaps realised that what she started, she should have seen through to the right time - and it's actually illegal in some places to sell, or give away, a puppy of under 8 weeks. Not for nothing is this the law! Puppies are not normally fully weaned until they are 6 weeks, for starters, and then, good breeders know the extra weeks are absolutely vital for puppies to be properly established in their diets, and to socialise with their siblings so they start to learn how to be well rounded adults. Another reason for keeping a litter together that bit longer is because of the risk of infection once they leave the nest. By 5 weeks, any natural immunity a puppy should have taken from his mother will start to drop away until by 8 weeks he has none, and external vaccination can be started. In the meantime, he's now going to exposed to all kinds of often fatal dog diseases and you will have to take a lot of care he doesn't walk off your property, or have contact with anybody coming in from outside who could quite easily walk infection in - including their dogs. Even if they are fully vaccinated, and healthy, that could still happen. I hope it all goes well with your puppy of course, but he's not had the best of starts. Has to be said. If there is a next time, please do not buy a puppy of under 8 weeks. Minimum.

When our dog was eating it, I talked to the vet about it. He said our dog needed more protein. So, I switched his food to one with more protein in it. That was 18 months ago, and he no longer does it.

Get some MSG (monosodium glucomate) and pour over the dog's food and that willsolve your problem. There is no really good explainations.
