No. Just add a bit of water to the bottom so it doesn't burn down there. By covering it you are going to basically be eating boiled roast. I just made one yesterday in my crockpot. I put less than an inch on the bottom and I added seasoning to that so when it condenses that is hitting the meat. I rubbed olive oil over the roast along with some pepper and garlic salt. Let it cook all day and shredded it up when I got home and added BBQ sauce and we had sandwiches with it.

Absolutely if you are making a pot roast that will fall apart when prodded with a fork. Cover the meat and vegies with a liquid. If you don't, the meat will just burn to the side and bottom and become yucky. You can also use a beef or chicken stock to add a little more flavor

just put water up to about a third of the way up to the roast. This is to keep the bottom from burning. The roast will make some of its own juice also which is really good on mash potatoes or for a stew.

you do not have to cover it completly in water, I usually go about an inch from the top of the meat..

if you completly cover a large roast, you risk the chance of a huge mess when it cooks down and makes its own juice and overflows..
hope this helps...

If you are seasoning it with french onion soup, just fill the envelope the soup came in with water and pour it in, that is enough water and it makes the roast so tender it will pull apart with a fork.

If you are going to add any liquid, make sure it's bringing some flavor with it. Broth, wine, etc.
