Just the sort of think John Wayne said in all his movies.....in slightly less elegant terms.

Basically: the character of a man isn't determined by the trouble in his life but, rather, by how he *handles* the trouble in his life.

It means exactly what you said it means. Your husband sounds a bit jealous or wants to put you down. Kind of mean if you ask me. You have every right to feel like you do. I would feel the same way. I think your husband said that to you because he doesn't want you to think this guy thinks you are hot. If other guys find you attractive, then he feels threatened so he insults you and puts you down so you won't believe you are attractive. He sounds like a big jerk on this incident. The guy paid you a very nice compliment. Your husband basically said you are not attractive enough to warrant such a compliment. I would be highly insulted if he were my husband and he would be very sorry he ever said it once I was through with him. The first thing I would do is that when he got feisty, I would say, "Oh, I don't know how you would ever want to be with such an ugly woman like me that no man would ever find attractive," and let him sleep alone for a very long time until he begs my forgiveness.

It is so easy to cruise through life when everything is simple and flat.

But once you encounter a stumbling block such as adversities and trials, then you will come face to face with who you really are, ultimately leading to the realization that your inner strength can only go so much, that you need someone higher than you are, greater than you will ever become in your life, that you need your Creator to lead you and give you the strength you needed in order to overcome and become the winner your HE meant you to be.

Simply put when times are hard you dig down inside yourself and pull out all stops, sometimes this surprises us by how much we can bare, and how much we can actually achieve until we are forced into doing it.
