Buttermilk is much different in consistency. It is thicker than 2 per cent milk. If you have no buttermilk you can substitute 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice plus enough milk to equal 1 cup. Just stir together and let stand for 5 minutes. You can also substitute non flavored yogurt.

Buttermilk is actually lower in fat than 2% milk. It is the milk left over from making butter from full-cream milk. You can replace buttermilk with sour milk. Add one tablespoon lemon juice per cup of 2% milk. You won't notice a difference in the cake.

Yep...don't use the 2% I have used yogurt as a substitute in the past...I would run out to the store and pick up the Buttermilk!...happy baking!

yes! 2% milk is called sweet milk. There is a big flavor difference! You can add vinegar to make it similar to buttermilk

oh gosh yeah. 2 totally different items. BUT YOU CAN USE (for 1 cup buttermilk)
1 c plain yogurt
OR
1 tablespoon vinegar OR lemon juice- then enough milk to make 1 cup (let stand 5-10 minutes)

Yes, it will not have the same texture. You can use 2% but add a teaspoon of lemon juice and let it sit for an hour before using it.
