Interesting question but one easily answered if you understand the social and environmental influences of the region.

First the middle east (where the bible was written) is very arrid. Any water was quickly welled and built around. The well became a place of comunication and gathering because it was the only place to get water. So like a person today would go to a club or bar or other social activity to meet some one they would go to the well. It was where it was going on.

The well is the frequent place for women to draw waters from. Most of the women doing the tasks are daughters still unmarried. Men mostly are travelers on camels or horses where the animals also need to drink and ususally places where there is water, there are also trees that giives temporary shed for the tired travelers under scorching sun.

In Biblical days, many young women went to the well to fetch water. It was the chores of young girls or women to carry the water. So many young interested boys/men asked for drinks of the cool water. There were many social times near the well.

The women either carried the water or were at home, so the only place to find women, (if it was not prearranged by your father), was at the well. By the way! You forgot to mention Abraham and Joseph.

In Biblical times, the well was a popular gathering place for women, as it was their duty to gather water. It makes sense to me that this would make it a higher-than-normal "pickup spot" for men in Biblical times *shrug*

Best of luck!
