The marriage that Paul is describing in that passage is one that starts with complete surrender: each person giving each other everything they can. That unconditional support, in which both people have the energy to care for the other because of the care their spouse lavishes upon them, is a defining characteristic of the best marriages I have seen (I'm talking about people who have been married for 15 years and never had a fight, without resorting to avoiding each other or taking their problems out on other people.) The problem with this passages is that some obsessively patriarchal Christian men assume that it is their job to enforce or "encourage" the submission aspect of this, while conveniently forgetting about their own responsibility to love their wife as they love themself, as Christ loved the church. It may be argued that the instructions are different, and thus describe different obligations, but if anything, they are weighted in the other direction: to genuinely love your wife implies respect for her and a desire to submit to her and make her happy, while merely submitting to your husband does not require you to love him. (I generally attribute this difference to the power imbalance in marriages at the time: the man had all the legal power in the relationship, so he was held to a higher standard. Since my husband and I would have the same economic viability and the same legal rights, I would try to hold myself to the higher standard of Christ-like love.) Here is my issue with your position: the marriage described in Ephesians is not one-sided, while the conservative, patriarchal, male-headship based theology it is used to justify, is almost always lopsided, and too often completely unilateral. Paul had a valid point but like most of his points, it has been twisted and used to excuse all sorts of foolishness.
