Hi,

I wanted to know if it is possible to use Yoga Nidra as a sleep substitute? If it can be as effective as deep sleep to the point that you can live solely on Yoga Nidra without the need for traditional sleep?

Thanks!

Our bodies will always need sleep, no matter what, no exceptions.

Some people can go without sleep longer than others because of having excellent health, but no one can go indefinitely without it.

I know this because I went weeks without any sleep and about a year without any quality sleep, and it eventually landed me in the hospital with several very serious health problems.

Plus, what possible reason would anyone have for practicing said behavior?

As a rule of thumb for health and just about anything else in life, replacing natural habits with unnatural ones is a dead end with only temporary benefits at best and severe illnesses or death at the worst.

Yoga Nidra is a systematic method of complete relaxation, holistically addressing our physiological, neurological, and subconscious needs.

The ancient yoga text the Mandukya Upanishads refers to four different stages of Yoga Nidra. The practitioner begins by quieting the overactive conscious mind, then moves into a meditative state, gradually finding a state of "ultimate harmony," in which the brain waves slow down and a subtle euphoria emerges. Though most practitioners don't slip easily into the more advanced stages, they still tend to emerge feeling rejuvenated. Yoga Nidra uniquely unwinds the nervous system, which is the foundation of the body's well-being.

To answer your question, NO. Yoga Nidra is not a substitute for sleep however may give you a more well-rested feeling especially from a stressful and tiring day. You can practice Yoga Nidra once a day, anywhere between 15-45 minutes but you still need your 7-8 hours of sleep every night.

Wow, highly unlikely. I doubt you could get away with no sleep forever, but you can always try it. Let me know if it works!
