If you believe in god, are you afraid of god? If you do, why?

After all, its name means "war god".

Wow, I'm very surprised at you people. Why must you twist and contort my question to make it sound more favourable to you? I was not talking about respect, I was asking about FEAR. Plain and simple. Why is that so hard to understand??

As well, please do not assume that I know nothing of the christian religion. Most of my life was spent on it.

Perfect love casts out all fear. Am I there yet? No! Sure I have a little fear.

In the Bible it says we should "fear" God - that means to respect Him and revere Him. You of course are talking about real fear and as for being afraid of Him - no way. He is my Heavenly Father. He loves me and made me. I have a personal relationship with Him and His Son Jesus Christ. Why should I be afraid of Him - when He is my everything. I love Him dearly. Are you afraid of your loved ones? It's the same. As for it meaning "war god" - not sure where you got that. God is a God of love and mercy - but He is as just God and must come down hard on sin - sorry. Blessings to you and may you find the God of love and mercy - Jesus Christ.

Fear can mean respect. Fear can mean fear. He has the power to cast you into Hell, I won't mince words. It is a humbling experience to be in the presence of the Lord. It is true when it says: "Every knee shall bend." It is not because He is a "war god". It is because He is ALL.

I'm not a Christian but..
If you have an oral exam will you be just cool with the examiner or you will feal some fear from asking you some tough questions?

In this example he was just an examiner but God will examine your whole life and tell you what you did right and wrong. How couldn't you fear God if you know this fact?

It is always a good thing to have a healthy fear of that which is more powerful than you are. But it should be the fear that is like the healthy fear of your parents. I suppose a better word for it would be respect.

I have reverential fear of Him as I, as a child would for a parent; at the same time, I have the same privilege and joys of "crawling" up into His lap and pouring out my heart to Him when I have a heartache or a thanks or joy I want to share with Him. It's a wonderful, secure parent/child relationship with guidelines and boundaries in place for my safety, security, and well being!
I don't have to "fear" Him perse, because I do my best to get right with Him when He brings to my attention something I've done to displease Him.

EDIT:
Very insightful, MIDO.

He is the great I Am. Afraid of Him, that's a laugh. He is my God. I am however in awe of Him and wish to please Him as much as humanly possible. He is and always will be. Forever more. Wish I could share with you what wonderful happiness He can bring into your life. Would I be the same without Him? NO Way! He has made me who and what I am.

You are sooo very wrong . First off, our God is spelled with a big G. GOD. little g is for false gods. there you go. this is big to those who know and love GOD.
Are we afraid of God,??? NOt like you would think. We fear GOd, but fear isnt like ppl think it means today. WE RESPECT HIM and KNOW He is GOd, all powerful, almighty GOD. and therefore, we honor Him, and love Him, and do all we can to follow Him, as He knows whats best for our lives. and we do it not from fear, but from love. FEAR in Bible means respect. and you betcha, I sure wouldnt choose HELL, so why would I choose to reject God and His teachings. BUt this is not why I follow God. I follow Him because I love Him and He loves me. there you go.. unconditional love. PPL only end up in hell, because THEY reject GOD. They couldnt be in heaven, as there would be no peace in heaven, be ppl d stilll doing as they doggone well please, and messing up all the peace and joy in heaven. war god...??? Let me tell you this, it is not God who brings war upon this land. It is the ppl who refuse to follow God and are out to destroy everyone else in it that wont do it their way. Leves God no choice, but to protect His ppl. We dont want our Christian rights taken away . and we will fight for them. I dont want to one day be forced to worship a false god. do you? You better take a look around you and start thinking, studying and praying, or one day you will be made to bow to who knows what or who. Stand up for the one true God of the Bible, and have victory. choice is yours.

God wants us to fear Him. Not in an "I am scared of Him" way, but in an "I am in fear of dissappointing Him" way.
