My dog Oscar will bite my 2 year old son when my son gets near his food bowl or any food that Oscar is eating, even if my son gave Oscar the food. What can i do to bring this to an end (besides getting rid of the dog)?

There are a couple of options, teach your son not to go near Oscar when he is eating, get a squirt bottle and if he starts to growl at your son while he's around squirt him. It doesn't hurt and Oscar should be smart enough to figure that much out. But the dog could be jealous of your son, what is his behavior while your son is eating?! I know in my family we don't allow the dog around while we are eating so why would we allow anyone around them while they are eating?!

OK, so most of the answers here just acknowledge the nature of the dog, but don't seem to provide some simple and clear advice on addressing the issue itself. I will admit that they have some good points, but I haven't seen a suggestion to put the dogs dish up when it's not feeding time. Having your son give the dog his food is a good idea to associate him w/ the food, but, in agreement w/ many others, I would recommend training the child to stay away from the dish after setting it down is a good idea as well.

One way is to keep your son away and to teach him not to bother the dog at feeding time. But there is another i had to do this with my bulldog i put her bowl down in the middle of the room and talk to her and praise while she eats something about being in a open space keeps them less asgressive just try to keep the bowl away from walls and out of corners the dog will feel cornered and bite

If he does bite your son (or anyone else at any time for that matter) while he is eating, it's really a serious behavioral problem. I think it's so sad that people get a dog, whether it's finding one, adopting one, or buying one.. and then don't know/find out how to properly train it and end up having to "get rid" of it. Isn't that just sad? It's not the poor doggie's fault, it's our own! The next person who gets your dog will end up having the same problem as you, most likely, right? So where does the problem end? Luckily, your dog is quite young, and his behavior may be able to change fully. Get him to a good, professional trainer right away. It may cost a bit of money, but you're saving a poor little dog from a lifetime of aggressive behavior. He or she will be able to hopefully give you the best advice, and you can ask him/her all of the questions that arise on a daily basis. Food aggression is VERY serious, and until then, please watch out for your son very, very carefully (I'm sure you're already doing that, of course :o).

ummm....keep your son away from Oscar when he is eating!!!
I'm sorry, but I was ALWAYS taught that you DO NOT mess with a dog when he is eating or has a bone! Don't get rid of the puppy just teach your kid that and everything will be fine. How do you get a huskie/chihuahua mix??
:-)

Dogs are territorial and don't like anyone near their food, especially when they are eating. Our puppy bit our 11 yr., old son. Keep your son away from the dog.

Dogs want to defend their food while they are eating, and they dont like when you start poking at them or try to take their food away from them while they eat. And dont let youre son near the dogs food bowl while he eats anymore, or he might get hurt!

Wow, what a mix you should post pics....but as far as dogs, food and kids all I can say is don't mix the three!!! Even a well trained older dog could do this.. that's his food and he will protect it
