The Marines are actually a branch of the Navy but they don't like to admit it. The Coast Guard is part of Homeland Security but still considered military. The Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines all have 'reserve' forces and the Air Force and Army have National Guard units in every state.

Welcome to the Human Resources Directorate

The Human Resources Directorate (HRD) is part of the Washington Headquarters Services, a Department of Defense Field Activity.

HRD employees work in 10 different Divisions serving the Human Resource, Personnel Security, and Equal Employment Opportunity needs of civilian, military, executive, and political personnel.

The broad functional areas of HRD include Civilian Employment; equal employment opportunity; security investigations and clearances; adjudications and appeals; and voluntary campaign programs (e.g., Combined Federal Campaign).

To learn more about HRD, go to the Who We Are tab at the top of this screen. A drop down menu will appear, and you'll be able to select and view several screens describing what HRD does and who it serves.

Navy. Army, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and (in times of war) the Merchant Marines. What grade are you in that you didn't know that? Then there is the National Guard and the reserves, Civil Air Patrol and ROTC. That about covers it.

here they are and some of their more substantial subgroups w/in the branches
air force - AF special ops command
army - snipers, rangers & green berets
navy - seabees, seals, snipers, & underwater demolition teams
marines - recon teams, snipers, & presidential guardians

then there's also the coast guard - but honestly, i don't know much about them, but i do believe they are mostly used to patrol our waters (mostly for drugs if recall correctly)

you could also consider the commanding branch part of it - that would be the commander in chief, the pentagon, etc.
