Between Lonely Planet, Ric Steves, Frommers, etc., etc., I have no idea which one to pick.

Well I guess it depends on where you are going and what you like. Rick Steves seems to focus on Europe. Fodors, Frommers and Lonely Planet are worldwide. I would check each website and see what they each offer and see how that compares to what you are interested in. I have only bought ONE guide(Fodors) to China when I was going to visit Hong Kong and possibly other parts and it was okay. I read more about Hong Kong online than I did from the book.

You could subscribe to Frommer's Budget Travel. For USD 12 - 20 per year it's pretty good magazine. And gives you a variety of locations and ideas about travel.

Bottom line: check online first then consider a travel guide. Besides it is a pain to carry those things around when you travel. You will probably make a list or itinerary before you leave won't you?

It depends on what kind of traveller you are and where you are going. In general if you are a budget traveller or a backpacker then the Lonely planet is good. If you are going to travel for $100 a day or more then Fodors of Frommers.

Between the ones listed I'd go with Frommers. However, I prefer the AAA Spiral Guides because when you are on a street corner trying to find your way, while holding a book in one hand and your umbrella or shopping bags in the other, you can flip back the opposite pages (like a spiral bound notebook) due to the spiral binding so the book fits in your hand better and you can read it better.

All of those are good ones...probably wont go wrong with any of them.. Steves is great in Europe, ideally get Steves and one of the others.
