'They' advise that we consume a maximum of 25-30% of calories in the form of fat. So if you consume 1800 calories per day, this means that 450-540 calories come from fat. Since 1 gram of fat contains 9 calories you should consume between 50 and 60 grams of fat.

If you are trying to lose weight, no more than 25. If you are just trying to maintain the weight you are now, no more than 30. You don't want to go lower than 25 because then your body thinks you are starving it (everyone needs fat to burn calories) and it will slow everything down to hold on to it. Must eat fat to burn fat.

It is different for each person. If you are trying to lose weight it is more important how many calories you get daily. If you are just trying to lower your fat intake here is a good site to check out. It will give you a personal number for what you fat intake should be.
