Jetta 91, manual trans, on a turn i tried to put the 2nd gear, made a loud noise and it started knocking. While being in neutral with the clutch un-pressed knocks, you push the clutch and it stops. but when in movement, it still knocks. Could it be the clutch or do i need a whole new trans?

It sounds like you might have a problem with the cv joints.(constant velocity joints). These are at either ends of the front axcels. So there a four altogether.
When they are dry , they start making a knocking sound. Its best to take it to a shop to make sure.

Take it to the mechanic. You may need a new one, but he may be able to salvage it.
