The surround sound would have to be pretty loud for people around you to hear it unless your walls are paper thin and you need it loud because you are a bit deaf!

If you do decide this is necessary, be prepared to lose a little bit of space in your frontroom. My ex used MDF boards and fibre to insulate his studio. He is a p/t DJ and has a ton of equipment to facilitate this. He basically insulated his wall as though it were a loft. He didn't use thick insulation. Instead, he used a thin insulation designed for sound proofing and then MDF board to create a false wall. This is why I mentioned being prepared to lose a bit of space in the room. He ended up losing 2 inches - not a lot for what he wanted to achieve and the room is pretty soundproofed...

My other advice - even if you live in a penthouse (as I do), ensure you use insulation under the flooring if you have people liviing below you, as my ex did. Luckily, we had laid laminate flooring and ensured that we had installed soundproofing before laying it.

If you have people living above you, you will need to get professionals in to put in a false ceiling with soundproof insulation...

Good luck to you! :)

Just need more insulation! most "Egg cartons work well"
I made a mic room out of a closet once! had to be sound proofed!
I took a peice of ply wood and angled it so it it was like about 3 inches from the celing and then i took the other part and put it directily on the celeing and the wall and stuffed it full of foam snakes... and drilled into a wall! I did that for all ways as long as there is an angle of some sort and it's fulled with some sort of insulation you should be set! for extra sound proof just put the eggfoam stuff on the outside of that!
Mad love!

Facing a similar problem with the old sub-woofer myself.
What i thought about is:
Putting a baton along the wall, say2 x 1 inch .Power stapling some good ceiling tiles or roof insulation in between the gaps then covering it with wood panel.
Should give you a bit of inspiration i hope..?

you can get a soundproof matting . obviously its the air vibrating, oscillating at the same frequency as the sound that causes the problem, just an idea off the top of my head ,possibly hang a curtain rail at high level on thaat wall using very thick crtain material, i think this will deaden the sound.

You would have to figure out the material, but sound waves could get trapped in an area with earthly substances or make sound travel faster so it can't be heard.

A music teacher at school once told me that you could soundproof a room with egg boxes - you could always make a feature out of them.

the one way i know of is using empty egg cartons (the very largest) basically you cover the wall(s) in them, not really to sure how it works, but it does.....

here is a link with some ideas and one with a pic of a room done in egg cartons.

stick egg boxes on the wall, or pay thousands of pounds and do it properly.

(I've never tried the egg box thing, but that's basically what soundproofing stuff is, egg box shaped foam.)
