whether its a male or female and is the context in which they call/refer to that more or less offensive. i.e.: when a female is angry with you uses any of these words to talk down to you. or a man uses it in a demeaning sexual manner

As you mentioned, it depends on who it's coming from and what the situation is...if someone I don't know IMs me and says "hey honey" or "hello darling" I don't like it because I think that is an inappropriate way to address a total stranger...

Now, I'll refer to my friends as sweetie or sugar, and someone I'm dating as baby...but then sometimes 'sugar' can be loaded with sarcasm and not mean to be endearing at all...

So...short answer is, it depends.

I work with a girl (same age so weird to call her lady) who calls everyone (male/female) hun or sweetie. Becomes irritating but I don't take offense.

It doesn't offend me, I admire the sweet talk and I sometimes use it myself to lighten a situation. I guess when your raising children, it begins to feel like a natural way of talking.

Have a great day sweetie!

it's ok from ladies older than myself, it sounds like i'm special to them. but when they're younger and call me sweetie...weird. if used in an angry tone, it feels demeaning to me by either male or female.

Affectionately, no. In a "demeaning sexual manner," definitely. It's almost as bad as calling a girl "sugartits." (Hear that, Mel Gibson?)

I think its sweet coming from a male or female. However if its used as sarcasm, I would not be offended I would think they are rude and walk away.

It would offend me if it is used in the context to be condescending, but not in an everyday conversation.

It depends on the person and situation. I can take certain things from my husband or close friends because I know them well enough that they're (usually) only joking. I won't take it from someone I don't know well.

I think it is so condascending I do not like when people call me that. I went to a restaurant and this girl who was younger then me was calling me honey and I think that is so rude because they are talking down to you I hate it so much
