How can I improve my community or neighborhood, creatively?

Question

I want to improve my community/city by doing something really original. Please don't suggest that I "clean up the trash" or "paint a house" or "help an old woman cross the street". I'm looking for a very unique, original way of getting people's attention. I want to focus on a particular aspect of my community and get others involved. Someone dropped a large banner from a downtown building here last year that read "hug a stranger". I need something like that. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would like to do something that reaches a lot of people...or something that makes a huge difference but just for 1 person.

I would plan a block party. You can get permission from the city to block off part of the street or alley (if not, do it in the local park). Do it as a potluck or have everyone bring their own meat to cook. Have a few kids games. We did street bowling for the adults. Give every neighbor a flyer. Make them wear name tags while there (maybe also with their address). Nothing makes a neighborhood better like neighbors actually KNOWING each other.

If there is a small, vacant plot of land in your neighborhood, would you consider planting a small flower garden? You could put a small bench, a bird bath a bird feeder, and plant all kinds of flowers (the idea is creating a super small park-like setting). Everybody loves flowers, and the people in your community will find your small garden as a place to relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Once people learn about it, and begin to frequent the area, it will bring your community together as people get to know each other and establish bonds of friendship.

try fixing up a park! make banners that tell where, and when asking for volenteers. our park is crappy, and we have so many kids here, it would be really great if it got fixed. i'm sure it could work for u guys too.. GOOD LUCK!!!!
