Maybe, maybe not. There are two potential problems. First, the AC impedence may be too high, so it doesn't draw enough current. Second, it might "chatter," especially if the flapper is of low enough mass to vibrate at a 60 Hz rate. The only way to know is to try. However, why not just connect a little bridge rectifier to it?

A comment on an answer that said it would burn up: an empirical definition of RMS is that if a voltage with a certain RMS value is applied to a resistance, the resistance will dissipate exactly the same amount of power that it would if it received a DC voltage of the same value.

It may be useable. Try it out. If it doesn't work, and if 4.5V is enough to trigger it, you could run the AC through a bridge rectifier and a capacitor.

Alternatively you could have the AC converted into DC with a rectifier and use that to drive a transistor instead of the relay.

It will for awhile but will burn out over time as the AC volts are 6V RMS. It will draw more current as the RMS is .707 of peak.
This means that the I²R losses are greater, hence higher temperature.
