My dog had 9 puppies a week ago. Last night we brought the runt in because he seemed very weak and we figured he was not getting fed, since all the other pups were thriving well and seemed healthy. Well this morning we went out and one of the pups were missing. We looked everywhere. My father says that dogs sometimes eat their young if they die, or are sick. But wouldn't there be some trace of blood. or fur? Will there be bones visible in here poop??

If you won't even keep a new mom and puppies in the house, you have NO BUSINESS having an unspayed female!!! That is VERY irresponsible!! Anything could have gottne them!!!!

Well congratulations and I am sorry to hear about the problem. I know first hand how heart retching, emotional and physically draining this can get so when the mom and pups sleep you rest as well. The tube feeding is the best way for what you are doing and you need to have someone show you the proper way. You do not want to a.) Get fluid in their lungs and b.) Let them become dehydrated. Either could kill them. If you don’t know how to check for dehydration, pick the skin up off the back of the neck or just the back to check for elastically. If it does not spring back almost immediately they are starting to get dehydrated and you will have to get a little more aggressive in giving them fluids. Increase the amount you are giving them and shorten the time in between feedings. Example if you are giving them 10cc every 3 hours, up it to 12-14cc every two hours. And call your vet for proper dosage. Keep them and mom warm. Set up the box to be an incubator type situation but not so hot they get dehydrated. Keep all traffic out, except for you and one other person to fill in for you if you are gone or resting. Hope this helped Good Luck and ask your vet or a friend if they know someone that might mentor you. It is not your fault or the puppies; you just need guidance and help.

Your Dad is right, females, of any species, will eat their dead young. They do it to reabsorb the nutrients and calories lost during pregnancy and labour. I've raised dogs, cats, Guinea Pigs, and gerbils, and have witnessed Parental cannibalism of the young. There was never blood, bones, or fur left, when the mom was through. You didn't say if it was the runt that was gone. Runts and/or sick young are ignored, take that one away and the second smallest baby will start to show it's own weakness.

Check under your porch or house. Also, no the dogs won't eat the puppies unless it's a long time after the death. Dogs won't eat each other unless it's a last resort, like if they're starving or something. Just look around in the yard, under the house, everywhere. It should show up soon.

take them to a vet! and yes, dogs will eat their young if there is any risk to the other pups on spreading sickness (or if the pup is dead). the dog doesn't tear it up when it eats the pup, it just swallows it (but if the puppies are large enough, the mother will NOT eat them...its usually within the first few days).
